Welcome to Manasvi Maternity Center , a centre of love & care
Most of us experience irregular periods at some point of time in our life… And we do so HATE to have to visit a gynaecologist.
If it is your first time, you may wait and watch. A one-off thing can be due to stress or some lifestyle change or just unexplained. If the problem persists, it is time to see your gynaecologist.
If periods happen more frequently (polymenorrhoea), it is usually due to hormonal imbalance (anovulation) and you need to often take hormonal treatment. If you are more than 35 years of age, your gynaecologist may suggest D&C to diagnose the problem, especially if periods are heavy too.
If periods are delayed by more than 15 days, you must do pregnancy test. If not pregnant, it could be stress-related, anovulation or PCOS (polycystic ovaries), ovarian cyst or a problem with the uterus. We usually give medicines to get ‘withdrawal bleed’ and continue hormones for 3-6 months to regularise periods.
In most cases of irregular period, we advise a thyroid hormone test and ultrasound of the pelvis.
If you bleed in between periods, it could be ovulatory bleed (midcycle), inadequate hormones or a tumor of the uterus/cervix.
If you bleed after intercourse, do see a gynaecologist immediately.
Even if you have regular periods, don’t forget your annual gynaecological check up, esp. PAP Smear :-)
